DAY 1: Cusco → Humantay Lake → Quiswarniyoc Campsite

Your unforgettable Salkantay Trek adventure begins early in Cusco, with hotel pick-ups between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. Your guide will gather all participants, and around 5:15 AM, you’ll depart toward Mollepata, a scenic 2-hour drive through the Andes.

Upon arrival, enjoy a hearty breakfast 🍳 (included) and take a little time to buy any last-minute supplies. After roughly an hour in Mollepata, the journey continues for another hour to Soraypampa, where you’ll meet the muleteers and horses—your support team for the trek.

🥾 Trek to Humantay Lake

From Soraypampa (3,900 m), the hike to the stunning Humantay Lake (4,200 m) begins.
The trail starts with a gentle ascent for about 1 hour, followed by a steeper climb for another hour. In total, it’s around 2 hours to reach the lagoon.

Once at the top, enjoy free time to soak in the vibrant turquoise waters, capture epic photos 📸, and listen to your guide’s explanations. Depending on the weather, you’ll spend 1 to 1.5 hours exploring this magical spot.

🏔️ Final Day – The Ultimate Visit to Machu Picchu

Your final day is dedicated to exploring the magnificent Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most iconic archaeological wonders. Your entrance time is determined by the schedule on your ticket, so it’s essential to arrive at the main gate exactly at that time.

To get from Aguas Calientes (where you spent the night) to the Machu Picchu main entrance, you have two options:

🚶‍♂️ Option 1: Hike to Machu Picchu (Approx. 1.5 hours)

Begin with a 30-minute flat walk from your hotel to Puente Ruinas, the first checkpoint. Here, you’ll present your passport and Machu Picchu ticket.

From Puente Ruinas, the trail climbs uphill for about 1 hour, including roughly 1,700 stone steps.

➡️ If your entrance time is 6:00 AM, be sure to start the walk around 4:30 AM, right after breakfast.

🚌 Option 2: Shuttle Bus to Machu Picchu (30 minutes)

If you’d rather conserve your energy, the shuttle bus is a comfortable and convenient choice.

  • Cost: $12 USD one way

  • Tickets can be purchased the night before or the same morning

  • Buses run starting at 5:30 AM, departing every 5–10 minutes

  • Boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis

💡 IMPORTANT:

Regardless of how you go up, the most important thing is to be at the main entrance at the exact time shown on your ticket.

🗺️ 2-Hour Guided Tour of Machu Picchu

Once you enter the citadel, you’ll reunite with your group and your professional guide, who will lead you on a 2-hour educational and scenic tour.
The tour will follow the specific circuit assigned to your ticket.

During this experience, your guide will explain:

  • The history of the Inca civilization

  • The architecture and engineering marvels

  • The spiritual importance of Machu Picchu

  • The best spots for photos 📸✨

⛰️ Optional Hikes (With Extra Tickets Only)

If you purchased an additional ticket for:

  • Huayna Picchu, or

  • Machu Picchu Mountain (Montaña)

…you may begin your extra hike after the guided tour.

⏱️ Duration: Approximately 3 hours round-trip
⚠️ These hikes require advance reservation due to limited availability.

🚆 Returning to Cusco – Two Options

After finishing your visit, it’s time to return to Cusco. You can choose between:

🚆 Option 1: Return by Train

  1. Walk 1.5 hours or take the shuttle bus (30 min / $12 USD) back to Aguas Calientes.

  2. Board the train to Ollantaytambo (approximately 1.5 hours).

  3. From Ollantaytambo, travel by tourist vehicle to Cusco (2 hours).

🕒 Train departures: Between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM
⏰ Arrival in Cusco: Between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM

🚗 Option 2: Return by Car via Hidroeléctrica

  1. Walk from Machu Picchu back to Hidroelectrica (about 3 hours).

  2. You MUST arrive by 2:30 PM to catch the only car departure at 3:00 PM.

  3. Drive back to Cusco takes 5–6 hours.

⏰ Arrival in Cusco: Between 10:00 PM and 10:30 PM

⚠️ Important Note

This option is only possible if your Machu Picchu entry time is between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
A later entry means you cannot reach Hidroeléctrica on time, and you’ll need to stay one more night in Aguas Calientes and return the next day.

Any extra expenses—hotel, meals, or other services—are the traveler’s responsibility.
