🏔️ Final Day – The Ultimate Visit to Machu Picchu
Your final day is dedicated to exploring the magnificent Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the world’s most iconic archaeological wonders. Your entrance time is determined by the schedule on your ticket, so it’s essential to arrive at the main gate exactly at that time.
To get from Aguas Calientes (where you spent the night) to the Machu Picchu main entrance, you have two options:
🚶♂️ Option 1: Hike to Machu Picchu (Approx. 1.5 hours)
Begin with a 30-minute flat walk from your hotel to Puente Ruinas, the first checkpoint. Here, you’ll present your passport and Machu Picchu ticket.
From Puente Ruinas, the trail climbs uphill for about 1 hour, including roughly 1,700 stone steps.
➡️ If your entrance time is 6:00 AM, be sure to start the walk around 4:30 AM, right after breakfast.
🚌 Option 2: Shuttle Bus to Machu Picchu (30 minutes)
If you’d rather conserve your energy, the shuttle bus is a comfortable and convenient choice.
Cost: $12 USD one way
Tickets can be purchased the night before or the same morning
Buses run starting at 5:30 AM, departing every 5–10 minutes
Boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis
💡 IMPORTANT:
Regardless of how you go up, the most important thing is to be at the main entrance at the exact time shown on your ticket.
🗺️ 2-Hour Guided Tour of Machu Picchu
Once you enter the citadel, you’ll reunite with your group and your professional guide, who will lead you on a 2-hour educational and scenic tour.
The tour will follow the specific circuit assigned to your ticket.
During this experience, your guide will explain:
The history of the Inca civilization
The architecture and engineering marvels
The spiritual importance of Machu Picchu
The best spots for photos 📸✨
⛰️ Optional Hikes (With Extra Tickets Only)
If you purchased an additional ticket for:
Huayna Picchu, or
Machu Picchu Mountain (Montaña)
…you may begin your extra hike after the guided tour.
⏱️ Duration: Approximately 3 hours round-trip
⚠️ These hikes require advance reservation due to limited availability.
🚆 Returning to Cusco – Two Options
After finishing your visit, it’s time to return to Cusco. You can choose between:
🚆 Option 1: Return by Train
Walk 1.5 hours or take the shuttle bus (30 min / $12 USD) back to Aguas Calientes.
Board the train to Ollantaytambo (approximately 1.5 hours).
From Ollantaytambo, travel by tourist vehicle to Cusco (2 hours).
🕒 Train departures: Between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM
⏰ Arrival in Cusco: Between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM
🚗 Option 2: Return by Car via Hidroeléctrica
Walk from Machu Picchu back to Hidroelectrica (about 3 hours).

Drive back to Cusco takes 5–6 hours.
⏰ Arrival in Cusco: Between 10:00 PM and 10:30 PM
⚠️ Important Note
This option is only possible if your Machu Picchu entry time is between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
